Internova Ltd

Woodland Trust - Wild-About-Woods education resources

Brief:

Internova was asked to develop three educational resources for children at Key Stage 2 (7-11 year olds). The Woodland Trust was keen to communicate their key messages to children and Internova worked closely with the Woodland Trust's educational team and primary school teachers to come up with a set of rich interactive resources. These resources provide the impetus for expanded work in the classroom and for visits to ancient woodland sites.

Solution:

Each educational resource had its own unique flavour:

'Badger Wood' is an interactive discussion between woodland characters about a proposed by-pass being built through their wood. It is based on a blended learning model and is designed for use in the classroom supported by other teaching resources, or as an informal standalone piece that could be used at home.

'Trees Memory' is about what a tree has seen in its life time. Three trees have managed to mix up their photo albums and the user is asked to put their photos in the correct order using the information provided. The aim is for the user to understand how trees are affected by their environment.

'Concrete Poetry' allows the user to create poems by dragging words onto a woodland picture. The users can choose from a library of pictures or draw their own on the screen. Themes of wildlife and woodland are encouraged through the provision of themed word banks and the ability to input their own words.

Internova has been involved in a series of classroom evaluations of the software developed. The feedback from teachers and pupils has been very positive.

The National Assembly for Wales' Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning recently launched two of the education resources that have been translated into Welsh.
